Dear Stevenson-Carson School District families,

Over the past several weeks, Skamania County and our neighboring counties have seen unprecedented increases in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases. Just today, we’ve had several staff members who have learned they have had close contact with confirmed COVID-positive cases. While we have no reason to believe there has been close contact within our schools, the health and safety of our students and staff remains our top priority.

Accordingly, in consultation with the region’s public health officials, we have decided to step back in our transition to in-person learning and return all students in all grades to full remote learning beginning Thursday, December 3. As a reminder, this will mean no change to grades 9-12 as they are already in full-remote learning, but it does mean all students in grades K-8 will return to full remote learning.
At this time, we do not know when we will be able to transition back to hybrid/in-person learning, however, we do know it will not happen until sometime after we return from the winter holiday. I will keep you updated as we review case numbers and learn more about the status of this new surge in cases.

I want to take a moment to encourage you – my friends and colleagues – to take care of yourselves and your families over the upcoming holiday season. Health experts tell us that the current increase in cases isn’t even a result of Thanksgiving as that is too recent for cases to be occurring, yet. In other words, we can expect another surge in cases – a “surge on a surge” as quoted by Dr. Anthony Fauci – in the coming weeks and potentially a return to the explosion in the rate of new cases last seen in March.

I know that many of you will have questions about how to get online and how to get your student’s schedules. You will be receiving additional communications from your children’s school by Wednesday evening (December 2).  I realize how challenging this change will be for many, if not most, of our families. I committed to opening our schools whenever possible, and our team is ready to resume to in-person learning just as soon as our health officials deem that it is safe.

Thank you for your continued support. Please stay safe and stay healthy.

Sincerely,

Ingrid Colvard
Stevenson-Carson School District Superintendent
